In Germany it is a small village
indeed that does not have its
men’s chorus or mixed chorus.
Sängerchor Boston keeps alive
this splendid tradition. We are
a mixed voice chorus of
approximately 30 members. We
present both German folk songs
and art songs by famous German
composers. We rehearse every
Tuesday evening, 7:30 to 9:30 PM,
September through June at the
Boylston Schul-Verein. New
singers are welcome at any time:
just come to a rehearsal at the
Schul-Verein. There are no
auditions, and no knowledge of
the German language is required.
Each year, we present three
dinner/dance/concerts at the
Boylston Schul-Verein. At these
events we serve German cuisine,
home cooked by our members. Then
we entertain them with our
German songs. Dancing to a live
band completes the evening.
In addition to our own
events, Sängerchor Boston
provides music on festival
occasions for other
German-American organizations,
such as German-American Heritage
Day. This event, sponsored by
the
Associated German Societies of
New England (AGSNE),
celebrates the arrival of the
first Germans in North America.
The highlight of the year is
the annual Sängerfest of the
Connecticut Sängerbund. In this
choral competition Sängerchor
Boston joins with other member
German-American choruses. In a
tradition dating back hundreds
of years, judges mark the
performance of each chorus.
After the serious competition
the festival begins, celebrating
German food, beer, and song with
dancing to live music. |
